The lighting of the unity candle during the wedding ceremony is symbolic of two lives and two families uniting as one. Traditionally the mothers of the bride & groom each light one of the two taper candles prior to the wedding ceremony & place them on either side of the unity candle. During the ceremony the bride and groom each use the taper lit by their mother to simultaneously light the unity candle.
